Practical top handles designed to conveniently transport from room to room so as to warm hands and enjoy tea.
These handles also help the warm air flow around.
Typically used during the tea ceremon, when specially prepared charcoal, (Bincho-tan / ubame oak) was first heated in a brazier and then transferred onto the top of the sand inside.
On special occasions, fragrant wood chips, (cedar, pine, sandalwood or rosewood) were placed on top of the charcoal for heating and to provide a pleasing atmosphere. Pairs of hand warmers like this pair were created for use by the host and a guest, transported from room-to- room to warm hands and enjoy tea.
