The Dinka people, a Nilotic herder group in the Nile Basin, inhabit the vast savanna of southern Central Africa. While their historical background is somewhat obscured, the Dinka settled in the region around 1800 and have a reputation as formidable warriors, defending against the Ottoman centuries ago. Valiant warrior values are imparted through the initiation of young boys, who receive warrior equipment at the end. The Dinka's nomadic lifestyle is reflected in their art, with a focus on small, portable objects like stools and headrests. Carved from a single piece of yellowish-brown wood, these headrests, known as thoch, serve as both headrests and seats for old men and women.
