The beautifully carved feathers add to the imposing nature of the piece. The color is a warm tobacco brown and appears to retain its original finish. Judging from the base under its talons that has holes on either side, I suspect it was once mounted as a crest on the top of a mirror or a piece of furniture but it is bold enough to stand on its own. From the way it is carved and the chisel marks on the back, it looks like it was made around 1860-70 and probably Austrian or German. Its wingspan measures 27" and it stands 11" tall at the center.
