Created by skilled artists in secrecy, these sculptures were occasionally revealed in ceremonies, granting social prestige to the commissioner. The Dan, part of the Mande-speaking community, originated from Mali, residing in forested areas of Liberia, Guinea, and Cote d'Ivoire. They govern themselves through intricate family lineages, secret societies, and communal ceremonies, sharing cultural ties with neighboring groups like the Mano, Guere, and Wobe, characterized by their dynamic masking traditions and rich artistic heritage.
