II.66)” by Andy Warhol. From a vintage silkscreen poster, published in 1970. Numbered ‘93504’ on verso in pencil. From the delicate studies of flowers in Renaissance paintings to the botanical drawings of the 19th century, there is a rich tradition of art imitating nature. Warhol took these art historical inspirations and created a Pop Art composition that is a quintessential Warhol design. Commenting on the success of the flower composition art historian Nina Zimmer has written, ‘‘Warhol reduced and radicalized his Flowers to such an extent that the banal subject matter was now transformed into a powerful pictorial concept. The directionless format contributed to this: the pictures can be read in all directions; like an abstract painting, top and bottom, left and right, have been revoked.’’ Original paintings of the Flowers series have been known to fetch over $1 million. Dimensions: 26.75”h x 26.75”w (unframed). In good vintage condition with some slight discoloration on verso and item was curated from a smoker’s estate. Andy Warhol (1928-1987) was an American visual artist, film director, and producer who was a leading figure in the visual art movement known as pop art. His works explore the relationship between artistic expression, advertising, and celebrity culture that flourished by the 1960s, and span a variety of media, including painting, silkscreening, photography, film, and sculpture. Some of his best-known works include the silkscreen paintings Campbell's Soup Cans (1962) and Marilyn Diptych (1962), the experimental films Empire (1964) and Chelsea Girls (1966), and the multimedia events known as the Exploding Plastic Inevitable (1966-67). Today, Warhol's art can be viewed in countless museums and the value of Andy Warhol's work has been on an endless upward trajectory since his death in 1987. In May 2022, Shot Sage Blue Marilyn (1964) sold for $195 million at Christie's, becoming the most expensive American artwork sold at auction. less
