The particular backstamps on these hand painted 8.5 inch plates indicate they were produced between 1882 and 1890. Each fish is depicted in its native environment, rendered in muted shades. The plates' scalloped edge is decorated in gilt with a floral and vegetation design. All 6 plates are free of chips and cracks. Five of the plates are free of crazing. One plate has two lines of crazing in the glaze on its back side, which does not affect the top side. These Haviland Limoges plates represent the artistry and craftsmanship expected by the well-to-do of the Gilded Age of the late 19th century. See less
