Isabel Bishop (American, 1902-1988) is one of the foremost figurative artists of the 20th century, and is known for her images of New York City. She was a keen observer of everyday life in the urban environment, and known for her images of shop girls, secretaries and the down and out around Union Square where she had her studio. This image is typical of her work, illustrating students in Union Square. It is from later in her career where she is experimenting with a more abstract style.
Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, her family moved to Detroit and she grew up in the city. She moved to New York City in 1918 at the age of 16 to attend the New York School of Applied Design for Women. She then studied at the Art Student’s League, where she studied with Kenneth Jayes Miller, Guy Pene du Bois and Robert Henri. She opened her studio on 14th street at Union Square in 1926, and it became her base to depict the city. less
