It is so named because of the Greek word meaning "a rose" for its rose pink color. It was originally found in the Ural Mountains in Russia, but today it can also be found in India, Mexico, Brazil, USA, Sweden and Madagascar.

The rhodonite snuff bottle has a flattened oval shape with round shoulders and a slight taper towards a raised oval foot. The foot is hollowed out and well done. The opening is flat. The green adventurine cap compliments the pink color and the stopper is made of cork. Found radiating from the base on both sides is a notable matrix of black manganese oxide appearing as black lines which contrast dramatically against the pink. To add drama, the stone carver decided to carve an image of a dragon with scales and a long tail. The mythical beast adds additional interest to a snuff bottle that is already an object of beauty.
