Unusual large Staffordshire blue and white transfer ware platter / warming pan.
This platter is seamlessly fitted into the metal warming pan which is expertly fashioned by a tinsmith. The warming pan has two handles, one of which is designed as a small spout with a door into which hot water can be poured. This feature is beautifully crafted and works perfectly as designed.
The platter features a scene of the country estate known as Nuneham Courtenay, on the Thames River not far from Oxford, in Oxfordshire, England. Below and surrounding the estate are lush grounds which were designed by the landscape artist Capability Brown c. 1780. The scene, which includes ponds, buildings, streams and low hills, is animated by people in rowboats in the foreground and animals grazing on the knoll above. The platter’s graceful floral border is in the “Wild Rose” pattern.
The deep welled platter is unusually large, measuring 18” in Length and 14” wide. Including the warming pan the measurements are 18 ¼” in length and 14 ¼” wide. The depth of the heating pan is 2 ½”.
The platter/warming pan is in excellent Condition. There are no chips, cracks, or repairs visible. Insofar as the platter is firmly embedded in the warming pan we are unable to say whether or not there is a production mark and, if so, what it is.
We have not seen another warming platter like this.It stands out in terms of size, design, craftsmanship, color, functionality and condition.
