moreThis etching is signed, dated 1919 and titled, 'In the Park' in pencil. The work by American artist Eugene Higgins is a powerful depiction of the less fortunate members of society with a sentimental touch. On the grass to the left two families sit together. The mothers hold their babies as their older children look at up them. One gazes at her child with tenderness as her husband stands above with a dog at his feet. Below further down the hill solitary figures walk along the grass. The title of this piece, In the Park, suggests a idle almost idyllic Sunday with the family, however, the dark, rich tones of the burr and the indistinct faces of the figures give the etching ominous overtones hinting at the daily struggles of the subjects. Eugene Higgins (American, 1874-1958) was the son of Irish immigrants and born in St. Louis, Missouri where he grew up in a boarding house with his father after his mother passed away. A Social Realist, his upbringing impacted his chosen subject matter and he was influenced by artists such as Millet and Daumier. He focused on the downtrodden, homeless and less fortunate members of society, yet with a sensitive and compassionate touch. He was acclaimed by the poet Edward Markham as "the one powerful painter of the tragic lacks and losses.” This work is in very good condition with no visible matstain, lightstain or foxing less
