Carved spirit spouses have a long history among the Baule people in Western Africa. This figure, or blolo represented the owners ideal mate, the solution to their problems. Through an active relationship, the figure would cure the owners ‘affliction’. When this happened, the figure would be set free. Presented in a traditional style, with an elaborate coiffure, beard, dignified stance with elaborate scarification marks.
This piece comes from Cote d'Ivoire, which is not on the pre-populated list.
