"God of Wine": 19th-Century Staffordshire Pottery Figure of Bacchus
Circa 1820–1840
A charming and spirited Staffordshire pottery figure depicting Bacchus (or Dionysus), the classical god of wine, festivity, and agriculture. Dating to the early-to-mid 19th century, this figure is a delightful example of the English "flatback" or mantel ornament tradition.
The deity is modeled with a jovial, flushed expression, crowned with a wreath of purple grapes and green vine leaves. He is seated casually upon a wine barrel, raising a drinking cup in his right hand. He wears loose white garments—a shirt and breeches—edged in gilt (gold) lustre, and black shoes. The figure rests on a scrolling, grassy mound base washed in green and brown enamels.
Markings:
Painted Mark: A distinct red script digit "3" on the underside. (Such numbers are often potter's tally marks or size indicators within a series).
Condition: Good antique condition.
Measurements:
Height: 7 1/4 inches (18.4 cm)
Width: 5 inches (12.7 cm)
Depth: 3 1/2 inches (8.9 cm)
Historical Context:
Figures of Bacchus were popular in 19th-century English taverns and homes, serving as symbols of hospitality and conviviality. Unlike the earlier, more refined 18th-century porcelain figures, these sturdy earthenware pieces were made for the mantelpieces of cottages and middle-class homes, celebrated today for their bold modeling and folk-art appeal.
