An antique Japanese Kendo leather mask with steel face guard and thick padding.
CREATOR Unknown.
DATE OF MANUFACTURE c.1920.
MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUES Leather, Steel, Fabric.
CONDITION Good. Wear consistent with age and use. Some missing leather.
DIMENSIONS H 10.5 in. W 15 in. D 9 in.
HISTORY
Kendo originated from the experiences of the samurai who trained to use “nihonto” (Japanese swords) in combat. The samurai thereby acquired a distinctive appreciation of the “principles of the sword”. It is believed that through learning Kendo one is able to gain an understanding of the “principles of the sword”.
