A scarce Baroque period Spanish or Italian hand carved polychrome painted wood Santo sculpture with inset colored glass eyes, original white robe garment and later wood rosary.
Intricate and highly realistic detailing, the exceptionally executed late 17th / early 18th century wooden altar figure most likely depicting Saint Peter Nolasco (1189-1256) a Catholic priest known for founding the Royal and Military Order of Our Lady of Mercy of the Redemption of the Captives (the Mercedarians) with approval by Pope Gregory IX in 1230. Carved in the round, freestanding statue, very fine facial detailing and calm expression, wavy sculpted gray hair and long beard, attached arms bent and partially extended, undulating red body, one foot forward and toes exposed, on original green paint decorated base.
A superb museum quality example, in great antique condition, especially considering its age. Retaining original antique character and charm throughout, including typical scattered losses, evidence of old restorations, and beautifully aged patina with highly desirable craquelure.
