A rare and beautifully executed Bavarian porcelain dessert service comprising five hand-painted plates measuring 7.5 inches in diameter and a matching 9-inch serving bowl, dating from the early 20th century. Decorated in soft shades of seafoam green, aqua, blush, lavender, and ivory, the set captures the beauty of the shoreline through delicately rendered seashell studies accented with fine gilt detailing.
Each piece is individually hand-painted and signed by the decorating artist, with every plate featuring a unique seashell composition. No two scenes are exactly alike. Conch shells, scallops, oysters, and other marine specimens are depicted against tranquil watery backgrounds framed by flowing Art Nouveau-inspired scrollwork and gold trim. The matching bowl serves as the centerpiece of the set, featuring a dramatic arrangement of shells enhanced by a gilt fishnet motif, while the accompanying plates each present their own distinct coastal vignette. The reverse bears Bavarian porcelain marks associated with high-quality porcelain blanks produced during the golden age of hand-painted china.
With its luminous palette, exceptional artistry, and uncommon marine subject matter, this set displays beautifully in a cabinet, on open shelving, or as wall décor. Equally appealing to collectors of antique porcelain and those furnishing coastal, Palm Beach, traditional, or organic interiors, it offers both decorative impact and historical charm.
COLLECTOR'S NOTE
During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Bavaria became one of Europe's leading centers for fine porcelain production. Factories produced high-quality white porcelain blanks that were then sold to independent artists and decorating studios, many of whom signed their work. Marine-themed subjects were especially popular during the Art Nouveau period, reflecting a fascination with nature, organic forms, and coastal imagery. Complete hand-painted sets featuring individually decorated pieces are considerably less common today than floral services, making marine examples particularly appealing to
collectors.
