Crafted in England circa 1880, the unusual pedestal table features a rectangular hinged sewing box resting on an octagonal column and an elaborate shaped base.

The scalloped hinged lid is beautifully embellished with intricate mother-of-pearl floral arrangements, including blossoms, leaves, and grape clusters, accented with finely painted gilt foliage against a deep black lacquered background. The sides are further decorated with cascading floral garlands, gilt scrollwork, and ornamental medallions. Opening the lid reveals a spacious compartment lined with gathered dark blue velvet, originally intended for sewing accessories and suitable for storing jewelry or other personal treasures. A small decorative bird enclosed within a gilt wreath adorns the inside of the lid.

The rectangular box rests on a shaped apron with scalloped edges and gilt decoration, supported by a molded octagonal pedestal embellished with delicate gold motifs. The sculptural base features a quatrefoil silhouette with scrolling contours and additional gilt floral accents.

The antique sewing table is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, retaining a rich black lacquered finish with attractive signs of age, detailed gilding, and iridescent mother-of-pearl inlay. Both decorative and functional, this distinctive Victorian piece would make a wonderful addition to a bedroom, dressing room, or sitting area.
