Antique c.1850s Empire Style Birds Eye Maple Wood Dresser Chest Of Drawers Bureau with Secret Drawers
This beautiful Empire-style dresser was made circa 1850. It was acquired from the estate of a well-known antique dealer in Grove City, Pennsylvania. It is made of solid maple wood and has accents of bird's eye maple. The drawers also have a dovetailed construction.
There are 5 levels of drawers. The lower three open easily and have small brass keyholes (no key).
The two upper levels of drawers can only be opened by means of secret latches.
In order to open the top level of three small drawers, you must first open the large secret door beneath, which appears to be just a decorative front. In order to do this, you must open the third drawer down, reach up underneath the secret drawer, and depress a hidden latch made of thin bamboo. Once this large secret drawer is open, you can reach up under the top three small drawers and depress the secret mechanisms which allow them to open.
The upper level of secret drawers have a final layer of hidden drawers behind them. They will only open to half of their actual depth until you reach underneath and depress a second mechanism, revealing small divided drawers behind.
Please note, the secret bamboo mechanisms on the top left drawer are broken, so it opens easily and is no longer secret. It is engraved underneath (photo 8) with the previous owner's name, date, and style. The beautiful script reads, "Bob + Loretta Scott, From Marshall Scott, Bd. Rm, EMPIRE, 1850 or Before".

The top left pull-out drawer is missing one of the dividers and its secret bamboo mechanisms, so it opens easily. There is a small red mark in the second drawer, and there are some chips on some of the knobs which do not affect its functionality. Please see all the pictures. less
