moreThis listing is for one original gardener engraving designed after a Francois Boucher engraving, published in Paris in 1856 by A. Quantin. This particular image is from the Goncourt collection. The Goncourts were two brothers who co-authored all their books with one another. Much of their writing as documentarian, consisting of detailed observations and descriptions of objects. It is no surprise then that they became collectors, accumulating French eighteenth century drawings and pastels, and Japanese art alike. The siblings wrote several books devoted to praising the work of Rococo artist Antoine Watteau and his peers (popular or otherwise), which even included several of the brothers' drawings! The image - with its curvilinear design and sinuous elegance - demonstrates the Rococo style within the context of a more humble subject matter. Beautiful, detailed, and ever so French, this piece will look exquisite when framed, perfect for a bedroom or boudoir. Vive la France!
Francois Boucher (29 September 1703 – 30 May 1770) was a Rococo painter who took after French artist Antoine Watteau and Flemish Baroque painter Peter Paul Rubens. Despite using his wife and children as models, his work typically deals in mythological, allegorical, and romantic subject matter. Madame de Pompadour (chief mistress to Louis XV!) was his patron and commissioned several portraits from him.
