Vintage blue and white Grandma Moses “Williamstown” toilebarkcloth fabric.
The piece includes a selvage on the right side, which is marked with authentication that includes the name of the fabric. The other three edges are rotary cut.
The color reminds me of Flow Blue antique china. Originally painted in shades of brown and green, the painting was reproduced in several barkcloth fabrics, including one in full color and at least four toiles (grey, blue, green, and brown). While the full color version is fairly common and easy to find, the toile fabrics are very rare. For the sake of accuracy: Even though the selvage marking (last photo) says the fabric is a reproduction of a "Williamstown Toile" painting, I have not ever found evidence that Moses painted Williamstown in any toile designs. I believe all the toiles were reproductions of the original full-color painting.
~ The fabric is medium weight, heavier than quilting cotton. It has a fine, pebbly almost herringbone-like texture often found in Grandma Moses barkcloth designs. I consider this fabric to be barkcloth, as do most vintage fabric collectors and as did Riverdale, which manufactured it. A few vintage fabric collectors consider the term "barkcloth" only to apply only to very thick, very nubby fabrics, and this is not that kind of fabric.
There is one small hole near the bottom left hand side of the fabric, about the size of a nickel. There was also some yellow discoloration which was lightened during the cleaning process. This is pictured, and is most obvious when the fabric is flipped around. Photos provided show this discoloration, but it is really not very noticeable, especially after being laundered.
The pattern repeats 12 to 14 times. This fabric has never been used.
This item is being sold as is, without being cut. You will be receiving 3.5 yards in length and 46” in width. I don’t think you’ll find this much yardage of this fabric again. I scoured the internet and came up empty handed.
