We originally thought the texture … Read more Offered is a breathtakingly beautiful piece of lace detail studio pottery, signed by the artisan. We originally thought the texture of the platter was meant to resemble snakeskin or lizard skin - see closeup images - but then discovered this technique and can indeed verify that lace was used to create the texture and pattern. Unfortunately the artisan has only signed with their initials, "J.E.", which is sad because we would love to discover more of their work. Lace pottery is slab built and often employs impressions of antique lace, doilies or sometimes leaves. The pattern of the impression is then painted with underglaze and brushed glazes. This piece has a pinwheel flower center in a crisp sky blue, a persimmon detail that resembles a top stitch, a celadon layer of outer petals (that really does look like snakeskin), and a butter shade of yellow outline. The base is an incredibly soft shade of cream. While this may be food safe, we recommend that it be display use only.
