Ownership of Suan … Read more Chinese black wood or Suan Zhi is a highly desired wood by the Cantonese in South China. Ownership of Suan Zhi furniture was a sign of wealth. I have fond memories of being invited to the Suan Zhi Parlor in Komtong Hall, my Great Grandparent's residence in the Mid Levels of Hong Kong (presently the Sun Yatsen Museum.) Every piece of furniture in the room was made of blackwood and ornated with carvings. Small rectangular tables or stands similar to this pair would be used to hold potted plants such as mandarin oranges for Chinese New Year, orchids for the summer and chrysanthemums for the fall.

Each table/stand has square corners, the mitered table top holds a floating panel which allows expansion or contraction. The square straight legs has beaded edges, the apron is carved into connecting S-scrolls on all four sides, and the stretchers by the legs hold a shelf to complete the look.

The pair of table/stands may be small but the wood is very dense and heavy. They are good looking pieces and be effective stands for heavy sculptures. See less
