What is a daybed?

A daybed is a hybrid between a sofa and a bed. A daybed consists of a mattress platform surrounded by a frame on three sides. Most of the time the base of a daybed is a twin mattress, although larger bed frames can be used. Most daybed frames are constructed of wood or metal, but it is possible to find upholstered versions. Daybeds can also be procured in a variety of styles, ranging from contemporary to Mid-Century Modern. Wicker or rattan daybeds are particularly popular as well. Daybeds can be used in virtually any room, as well as outdoors, but generally, it is most common to find them used in a flex space such as an office or playroom that needs to double as a guest room. Daybeds are similar to a futon, but tend to be much more formal-looking. Unlike futons, daybeds don’t require being unfolded which allows them to forgo any technical moving parts and present more as standard furniture.
