Tanga Basket was born in 2016 in Bolgatanga, the capital of Ghana's Upper East Region — a city that has been synonymous with basket weaving for centuries. Here, in small family workshops and under the shade of mango trees, skilled artisans weave elephant grass into baskets of remarkable beauty and durability.
We started Tanga Basket with a simple mission: to connect these extraordinary craftspeople with the world, and to make sure that connection was built on fairness. Too often, the people who make the most beautiful things earn the least from them. We wanted to change that.
Every basket in our collection is woven from veta vera (elephant grass) that is native to the Upper East Region. The same grass. The same techniques. The same hands that have made Bolga baskets one of the most recognised handmade products in the world.
