Bio
José Luis Peláez is a Havana born, New York City based contemporary artist. He completed his education at the Cooper Union and has worked in many different creative genres. Initially trained as a sculptor, José found resonance with photography, painting and illustration during his time as a student and embarked on a 30 year career as a commercial photographer. His work has been featured in numerous publications including Architectural Digest, The Economist, Town & Country and Elle Decor. José’s advertising clients include Adobe, Citi, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Google and Hilton to name a few. His photography work is renown for natural but creative staging, casting and story telling that resonate deeply with clients. Now semi retired he has returned to his true love of painting.
Though trained in classical artistic traditions, more recently, José has begun to explore abstraction. He has begun to work with diverse materials including plaster, acrylic, pastels and even iron dust to create a new approach to figure and floral painting. A long time admirer of the work of Matisse and Picasso, José’s practice borrows from the vivid use of color and rough brush work that are hallmarks of many Fauvist painters. His creations have been admired and collected worldwide.
In addition to his home base in New York City, José has a studio in the Hudson Valley where he is continuously inspired by the flora, fauna and senses informed by the environment and the natural world. His work is also strongly influenced by his passion for gardening and his love of dogs.
