Highly detailed, color etching of Primrose by California artist John Whiteman Parker (American, b. 1945). Titled, numbered, and signed in pencil. Artist's Proof XII/XXXV (Edition of 35). Silver metal frame; shipped without glass. Image, 21.5H x 27L.
John Parker always inspired by and interested in various art forms. It was not until he visited the Orient that John Parker made the decision that would shape his life.
So deeply impressed by Japanese printmaking and Eastern design, he enrolled at the Academy of Art in San Francisco. He immediately received an honor student scholarship in illustration. Then proceeded to discover firsthand the fascination of printmaking. Transferring to the San Francisco Art Institute Masters Program he helped set up the graduate student printmaking workshop which continues today.
His work combines a strong sense of design and a love of drawing. In 1972 after receiving a purchase award at the U.S.A. Color Print Show John was invited back the next year as a guest exhibitor. His work was selected for exhibition at the 1975 San Francisco Art Festival and Wells Fargo Bank. John’s prints appear in the collection of the Denver Art Museum and the Achenbach Foundation of the Legion of Honor. He has also rendered many book illustrations.
John has a sense of closeness and strong personal feeling toward the printmaking medium . He finds excitement in drawing on the lithographer’s stone as well as the metal plates for etching. Prints allow the artist to communicate with more people than is possible with most mediums.
Much of John’s recent work deals with plants and flowers, inspired by the late 19th Century botanicals. His home too is filled with plants, providing an abundance of subject matter. The challenge in finding a contemporary approach to botanicals has been mastered by John in a most beautiful, sensitive and technical manner.
