Kazuko Watanabe is a graduate of the San Francisco Academy of Art University and studied at Fort Mason Printmakers in San Francisco. Her first exhibition was at the Miriam Pearlman Gallery, Chicago, in 1984. She has taught classes on printmaking at both the Kala Art Institute in Berkeley and the University of California, Berkeley.
Ms. Watanabe was the recipient of the Art Commission Purchase Award, Alameda County Art Commission, Alameda County, CA in 2000; the Library Fellows Award, National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, DC in 1999; and the Jerome Foundation Fellowship Award, Kala Art Institute, Berkeley, in 1986.
Of printing, the artist has said: "When one has drawn on the plate, the ultimate image remains invisible, its ultimate nature still a matter of mere imagination. The true image can’t be seen until the press has printed it from the plate, and the result even then may still be a work in progress. This is the aspect of printmaking that most fascinates me."
