Antique bamboo corner shelf or etagere is a stunning example of Aesthetic Style furniture dating to the Victorian era (circa 1880). Frame is "burnt" bamboo, a technique used to mimic tortoiseshell finish. Six lacquered shelves are decorated with birds, leaves, and flowers. This sculptural piece fits well in both traditional and modern decor (great with Noguchi) and is an interesting variant on rattan and wicker. Use as a plant stand and elevate your collection to a hothouse-worthy display.
The term popularly used to describe these pieces is Chinoiserie, but it is more accurately called Japonisme. The latter is a French term coined in the late 19th century to describe the craze for Japanese art and design that swept Europe and the US when Japan reopened trade with the West in the 1850s after being closed for 150 years. This piece beautifully melds Western function with Japanese sensibilities and motifs.
Condition is excellent. Despite its delicate appearance, the piece is strong and sturdy. Bamboo is all intact with no breaks or missing pieces. A few areas of separation do not affect the structure and are visible only upon close inspection. All wood carved end caps are present. Some cracks and small areas of loss on the lacquer shelves; minor scratches on the bamboo.
