The attractive and colorful painted wood trays was made by the same craftsmen who made Tibetan inspired furniture in the … Read more The attractive and colorful painted wood trays was made by the same craftsmen who made Tibetan inspired furniture in the post 1970's. The color palette is the same and so are the design elements with the multi petal flower in the center and surrounded by scroll designs in different geometric shapes radiating from the center. The colors are bold , especially the bright chrome yellow with is painted on the outer edge and the short scroll feet.

The maker of the tray is unknown. The craftsmen or maker of Tibetan inspired furniture are unknown. The merchants from whom I have purchased Tibetan furniture were not ready to speak openly about their sources. I personally have formulated some theories, of which I am ready to articulate:
1. There are Tibetan communities established in China along the Tibetan borders in Western China. They had been there since the 10th century when the power of the great Tang Dynasty faded and a strong Tibetan King invaded China and ruled for a period of time. These communities continued to flourish and they did not suffer the same fate when China occupied Tibet. The making and painting of Tibetan cabinets still continue.

2. Tibetan artists in Beijing make new cabinets and related articles in their workshops.

3. With the building of roads in Tibet, transportation of goods is much easier and skilled craftsmen are once again making Tibetan furniture. See less
