This piece is small but mighty! The shell art is nothing short of spectacular, with each panel depicting two white red-crowned/Manchurian cranes with black and red markings and rather delicate looking long legs. The tree trunks and leaves in each panel are shades of brown and tan. The background of each panel is pale yellow transitioning into pale green. Each panel depicts the artisan’s/company mark stamped in red and each panel bears a different “name” or description as per the stylized calligraphy characters in black ink. Each panel is comprised of a wooden black lacquer box with decorative cut-outs and a glass panel. The four boxes are attached via double hinges allowing the screen to be stretched out to its full width, or for the panels to be angled for display. The back of one panel bears a botanical wood burning carving, the back of another bears a wood burning carving of two horses, and the other two panels bear wood burning carvings of one horse.
At one point our grandparents displayed this table top screen in a glass front cabinet and later it was displayed on a shelf in our grandfather’s office. We’re uncertain of when they acquired it (or from where) but only have memories of seeing it in the early 1970s (and can’t find it in any family pics). We were told the intricate designs are comprised of mother of pearl and abalone shells but cannot confirm that. Of note, red-crowned/Manchurian cranes are believed to be a symbol of luck, longevity, and fidelity.
This piece is in good vintage condition with some rubbed areas on the black lacquer and some small chips/cracking on the wood pieces on the back. Thankfully, all of the shell art is fully intact.
