This Biomorphic Stone Sculpture is a captivating work to contemplate. Created by the British artist Hyam Myer (1904-1978). Myer, who was a painter, draughtsman, and sculptor, was born to Jewish-Romanian immigrant parents in Prestwich, Manchester, England. He studied at the Slade School of Fine Art under Henry Tonks, and later continued his studies in Munich and Paris.
This sculpture is a small but powerful piece, measuring 11 1/2" x 9 1/2" x 4". From the front, one can see the form of a woman kneeling. However, when viewed from the back, two additional forms emerge, and from different angles, the sculpture appears to reveal even more figures in relationship to each other.
The piece is signed on the lower left back, and there is a divot on the bottom that can be used to securely mount the sculpture on a plinth of one's choice. minor marks and wear, but commensurate with age and use.
Myer's work is represented in several UK collections, including the Ben Uri Collection, Bristol Museum & Art Gallery, and The Wilson Art Gallery & Museum in Gloucestershire. Despite his passing in 1978, his legacy lives on through his unique and captivating art pieces such as this one.
