JAMES CARTER
At an early age, James Carter would watch his grandfather painting wildlife scenes. While the 37 year old artist is not limited to wildlife subjects, wildlife, particularly endangered species, remain a more than occasional theme in his imagery. Yet, his artistic instincts compelled him to seek out and render the traditional painting subjects'still lifes and genre subjects' in order to develop his unique compositional style. The still lifes of James Carter inspire us to re-examine the familiar. His carefully contemplative subjects are voyages into the interior of a questioning consciousness.
Born in Port Chester, New York in 1948, he lived in Berlin, Germany with his family from 1962 to 1967. Here, he first experienced works from the Da Da Movement, an approach which most exemplified his own way of thinking. He was intrigued by the collages of Max Ernst and the soft, endless landscapes of Yves Tanguy; his initial paintings were explorations of these elements.
It was in New York, during the 1970?s that he first observed the works of Paul Wunderlich and Peter Paul. Their graphics and oils became the impetus to his full-time commitment to painting. While attending the Maryland Institute of Art, he was introduced to the air brush as a vehicle to achieve the translucent surface he was seeking. Using drafting techniques learned earlier, and utilizing a stage-set environment, he began to incorporate both inanimate objects with land and sea wildlife as subjects in surreal compositions.
In recent years, his art has become a means to explore the diverse relationships between objects and surface. Many who analyze Carter'? work associate his pieces with those of William Bailey and of William Harnett.
The recipient of over two dozen awards and honors since 1978, James Carter has exhibited widely with recent one man shows at Zenith Gallery in Washington, D.C. (1980, 1982); Summa Gallery, Brooklyn Heights, New York (1984), Upstairs Gallery, Beverly Hills, CA (1985). His works are also included in major corporate and municipal collections, including: Christian Dior, Inc., New York, NY; The Bruce Museum, Greenwich, CT; the City of Miami, FL; Yale University, New Haven, CT and United Jersey banks less
