See others being offered in our shop. It dates to 1921. George Barbier is known as one of the leading Art Deco illustrators of the early 20th century. He is best known for his theater and costume designs, book illustrations, and haute couture fashion illustrations. He illustrated for the prestigious Ballet Russes, the Gazette de Bon Ton, and the Folles Bergere. His works are highly collectible and often sold at major auction houses worldwide. They are classic and highly recognizable, captivating, romantic, and seductive. They are fashionable, flamboyant and quite exotic. Beware, as they are very frequently reproduced today! This is a lithograph that features "La Venitienne" in a theatrical production It appeared as an illustration in a French magazine dating to 1921 that accompanied an article on theater productions of the time. It is NOT a recent reproduction print nor is it a book plate. Barbier's works are rich in deep color tones; they have elaborate detailing, and often have classic references. They show the influences from Asian motifs and patterning. Barbier most often signed and dated his work with a scroll ribbon in an upper corner.
