Wonderful rare example of a Japanese Shoki-Imari vase from the early 17th century. Among the very first types of porcelain produced in Japan, the designs, and the use of cobalt can be attributed to the import of the classic blue and white porcelain being produced in China during the Ming dynasty. When the use of cobalt had been perfected, additional colors and overglaze enamels were utilized to create the traditional Imari palette commonly seen today. Shoki Imari is translated as 'Early Imari' and was produced in Arita located in the Saga Prefecture. While all Imari can be considered Arita, Arita porcelain is known for its signature blue and white colors while present-day Imari is recognized by its rich saturated hues.
This vase has old kintsugi lacquer repair around the mouth bestowing a wonderful wabi-sabi aesthetic. Likely used as a sake bottle or flask. Tomobako storage box included.
