Etching with Aquatint
A Lofty portrait of an Eagle by noted German artist Curt Meyer-Eberhardt.
The etching is absolutely stunning and will look fantastic in a contemporary frame. The original frame is long lost. The paper shows tape residue on the back from the past framing. Otherwise very good condition.
The plate marks measure 14" x 19". The paper with full margins measures 17" x 22".
Strong pencil signature in the lower right corner.
The edition size is unknown, but thought to be relatively small, as the Eagle seldom appears on the market. The artist is most well known for his life-like etchings of dogs.
The artist was born 1895 as Kurt Ernst Meyer in Leipzig before he changed his name into Curt Meyer-Eberhardt. He studied in Weimar from 1912-1917 under Max Thedy, Theodor Hagen and Walther Klemm. After a short stay in Munich he returned to Weimar at the Staatliche Bauhaus, where he attended the portrait course of Lyonel Feininger in 1919/20. Subsequently he settled in Munich.
Until the early 1920s expressionist and cubistic tendencies influenced his oeuvre, followed in the 1930s by impressionist and naturalistic influences combined with elements, he adopted from Cézanne. A wider public knows Meyer-Eberhardt for his affecting depictions of animals, which were published by Hanfstaengl Editions in Munich. He died in 1977.
