Very tall Wernicke Elastic 5 stack bookcase. Beautiful tiger (quarter sawn) oak. Unusual to find the stepped back style (lower stack is deeper that the other 4 stacks). Oak trimmed glass doors slide up and into each box for easy access to your books or collectibles.
All of the parts are marked with Wernicke labels. The newest patent date listed is 1897. This bookcase is prior to the 1899 merger of Globe and Wernicke which later became Globe Wernicke Bookcases. So this dates the bookcase to 1898. It even has a solid wood back instead of the later plywood backs.
The bottom wider stack is marked E 13 1/2 which denotes the deeper style for 13 1/2 inch books. Three of the stacks are D 12 1/4 which are for 12 1/4 inch books. One stack is for 10 1/4 inch books. Most antique stack bookcases were made for the common size books at the time ... shorter. Today books are taller which make this bookcase nice to find.
Comes apart for moving purposes: each stack is a separate piece and the top and bottom are separate pieces.
Exterior dimensions: Height is about 81 3/4 inch, Depth at base is about 15 inch and depth for the upper 4 stacks is about 11 3/4 inch. Width is about 34 inch.

Top has some marks which are photographed (would have to look down from a second story to see in a house.) One original back shows a crack in the solid wood. But, the solid wood is unusual and helps to date it and has the original markings from the company. You wouldn't see if you have books inside. Some normal and typical expected wear on the finish such as small scratches and marks. Variations in the color from the sun etc. Some imperfections in the glass such as waviness, bubbles, wear, and scratches. See the photos for further details as they are part of the condition and description report. Feel free to email me with any questions prior to purchase. There are reflections in the photographs. The photos are considered part of the description so please click on each to enlarge for a better look. Don’t miss out on this really wonderful item!! less
