A magnificent rare, large and most impressive 19th century Gothic Revival hand carved painted parcel gilt bibliothèque (bookshelf- buffet - china cabinet hutch - vitrine)
Exquisitely handcrafted in France, circa 1840, almost certainly Parisian ébéniste work, its bold dramatic appearance, timeless romantic elegance, and grand imposing silhouette have the ability to evoke complex emotions!
Massive monumental size, showcasing fine quality craftsmanship, intricate highly skilled handcarved ornamentation, and well made pine solid wood construction, exceptionally executed in visually striking Victorian era Neo-Gothic taste, influenced by the highly decorative Catholic churches and Cathedrals, Middle Ages ecclesiastical architecture, centuries old Medieval era castles, grand halls, palatial palaces, and royal court furniture.
Two-piece stepback design, with profusely carved decoration, brillant gold gilding and soft light airy pale green hued polychrome with grayish / slate undertones, the bookshelf upper section having a stepped molding cornice with projecting canted corners and abundant floral carvings, over a pair of distinctive sculptural pointed ogival arch framed doors, retaining their original glazed glass panels that both display what's inside as well as protects items from dust and moisture, opening to an oversized shelved interior, flanked by richly gilded trailing fiolate reliefs, atop a stepback cupboard lower with rounded corner shaped case, fitted with a single large drawer, over two doors embellished in intricate tracery and medallion motifs, opening to reveal spacious cupboard affixed with shelving and adding to the abundance of storage space, the exterior accented with simple lancet arch elongated window form trim emphasizing verticality and decadent sculpted fiolated giltwood carvings enhancing the lustrous warm luxurious presence and depth, all raised on integral contoured molded base.
Dimensions: (approx)
101" High, 67" Wide, 22" Deep
Condition Report:
Great antique condition enhanced by beautifully aged mellow patina over the whole. Delivered cleaned, waxed, hand polished, ready for immediate use and generational enjoyment!
Exhibition quality, superb presentation / statement piece. Strong, sturdy stable, structurally sound. Attractive appearance, retaining original antique character & charm, wear commensurate with age and use, including organically distressed original paint finish, gently worn, faded, with minor nicks, abrasions, accretions, scattered chippy paint losses and exposed gesso, nothing that detracts from the display or functionality but only adds to the authenticity, timeless sophistication, old world European grandeur and rich historical interest!
