A stoneware center bowl by American ceramist Warren Mackenzie (1924-2018). Thickly potted in rather distinct shape with a prominent mouth rim and tapered lower body, the bowl appears both robust and elegant at the same time. The surface was covered in a milky white glaze and decorated with a technique called Yubi-ato, with the artists finger marks left on the glaze internationally. The styling of the glaze and Yubi-ato is considered a modern interpretation of Japanese Shino ware. The fingerprints expose the red fired clay underneath, creating a wabi-sabi visual effect. The piece is stamped by the foot ring.
Warren MacKenzie was a student of Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada, the British and Japanese potters who were masters of Mingei (folk art) pottery. Mackinzie is credited with bringing the functional Mingei tradition to the United States and spreading it through his own art and mentorship during his long tenure at the University of Minnesota.
