A stoneware center bowl by American ceramist Warren Mackenzie (1924-2018). Thickly potted in an elm bowl shape and supported by a short foot ring, the bowl has a robust and earthy appeal. The surface is craved with hatched lines that cross each other in patches, forming abstract geometrical pattern. The greyish brown glaze was applied to the surface with ridges of the line scraped to expose the red fired clay underneath, creating a random wabi-sabi visual effect. The piece is stamped by the foot ring.
Warren MacKenzie was a student of Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada, the British and Japanese potters who were masters of Mingei (folk art) pottery. Mackinzie is credited with bringing the functional Mingei tradition to the United States and spreading it through his own art and mentorship during his long tenure at the University of Minnesota.
