A rare 19th century Chinese carved wooden teapot caddy. This tapering hexagonal bucket used to transport teapots and keep the water warm. The front has two panel with beautiful carvings. It has a hole opening for the spout. The top has carry handle carved, inserted into ears of the lid The handle also features some early engineering in its method of closure. This box has the charming irregularities that are characteristic of hand-fashioned items, rather than the precise match of something machine made 19th century. 11.5" H x 10 2/8" W over ears. The wood looks to be rosewood (not positive, so please see pictures). The wood staves are enclosed with two iron bands. The bands have an aged patina; they are not drilled into the box, but float on the surface. Wear consistent with age and use.
It is in very nice original condition. There is small chipping of the paint around the edges. It is also called a Chinese wedding box, a bento box, tiffin, storage container.
