The Boy in the Haycock.
Kent. A Tuesday, perhaps.
The air smells of damp earth and woodsmoke. Somewhere in the distance, a sheep has wandered into the meadow, and the cows are making an absolute nuisance of themselves in the corn.
And where is the boy in charge of this pastoral oversight? Fast asleep under a haycock, oblivious to the impending agricultural crisis.
It’s a scene of defiant, youthful tranquility. It’s also a masterpiece of Edwardian whimsy from the artisans at Royal Doulton.
The Details
This isn’t just "china." It’s a fragment of a lost era. Between 1909 and 1915, Royal Doulton produced a series of Nursery Rhyme ware that captured the innocence of the nursery with the precision of a fine art gallery.
The Pedigree: Flip it over. The manufacturer’s mark tells the tale: 1913. A year of elegance before the world grew quite so loud.
The Craft: Vibrant glazes, the iconic "Little Boy Blue" in his signature cobalt finery, and that distinct Doulton character that feels substantial in the hand.
The Condition: Reasonably good. It has survived a century of changing fashions and two world wars. It has "character," as we like to say—the kind that only comes from genuine age.
The Specs: 7" in diameter. The perfect scale for a mantle, a plate rail, or a very sophisticated toddler’s breakfast.
