A signed Flambe Sung Ware art pottery vase from Royal Doulton of England dating to the Art Deco period, circa 1930-1940. The high-fired and glossy ornamental glaze consists of a deep and rich red ground accented with shades of blue and golden yellow. The earthenware vase bears a printed factory crown and lion Flambe mark underfoot, alongside a hand-painted SUNG script mark, an FM monogram for Frederick Moore and Noke signature for Charles Noke. Very good condition with a couple of tiny glaze nicks, measuring 6.75 inches height x 6 inches diameter (at widest point).
At the turn of the 20th century, Doulton's chief designer, Charles Noke (1858-1941) and his colleagues experimented with firing techniques and metallic oxides in their pursuit of re-developing these highly ornamental transmutation glazes inspired by ancient Chinese antecedents. Their tests and trials resulted in sophisticated patterns and color combinations unique to every example of Doulton's artistic Flambe ware.
