Each square architectural base rises through layers of acanthus, palmette, and urn-form ornament to a sculptural winged sphinx supporting the candle cup above.

The combination of mythological figures, dense classical decoration, and softly aged gilding gives the pair the presence of objects collected on the Grand Tour. Their compact scale makes them especially handsome on a library mantel, marble-topped sideboard, writing desk, or dining-room console, where they can be displayed symmetrically with simple ivory tapers.
