Vintage Gianno Ferro produced and Fratelli Toso designed, Murine Murano Glass Mushroom Lamp in an unusual Yellow Green colorway with … more Vintage Gianno Ferro produced and Fratelli Toso designed, Murine Murano Glass Mushroom Lamp in an unusual Yellow Green colorway with white accents. This stunning opaque murine glass lamp measures 8" in diameter at the widest point of the shade and stand 18" high overall. The bell-shaped shade is removable from the brass frame or "harp". The curvy base is blown from one piece of glass with an opening at the top on which the electrical socket is fitted. The off-white chord is fed through the bottom and out a cut hole at the bottom back edge of the base. Although this lamp was made in Italy, it is outfitted with American electrical parts including the vintage toggle switch on the chord and the brown double pronged plug. The E12 socket fits a candelabra bulb and is covered with a ceramic cover. The original Gianno Ferro, Forsana de Muran a L'Insegne del Moreto, Made in Italy sticker is still on the bottom of the base. This lamp, with its classic design and unique colorway is a sculpture during the day and night with the soft glow that shines through the glass shade.

Notes: The design of this lamp was first developed by the Fratelli Toso in Murano during the 20 and 30s, after Ermanno Toso took over as design director and brought in outside designers to create new designs. It was the Toso family that resurrected the use of murine blown glass in the mid-1920s after many years of inactivity in Venice and achieved its peak in the 1950s, working with the most famous glass masters of Venice including Ferro, Barovier and Zuffi families. The families intermarried and new works were created, sharing designs and furnaces to bring them to life. This lamp, though originally a Fratelli Toso design style, was produced in the furnaces of Gianno Ferro, a relative of the original Toso family whose family also was a strong force in glass making in Murano.

Blown glass objects decorated with murine were first created by Venetian glass makers in the 16th and 17th century, modernizing the ancient process of working with murine with only fusing and slumping techniques. Creating this lamp was a 2 step process. First was the creation of the millifiore cane which included the creation of the distinctive layers of colored glass in a rod, using molding and blowing techniques, and then the cutting of the rods into small disks called murine. These disks were then applied to the outside of molten glass, allowed to fuse with the molten mass then blown. less
