Tapio Wirkkala (Finland, 1915 - 1985) drew inspiration from the landscapes of Lapland, where he lived with his family for part of the year. This is especially notable in his textured ice-like molds and both of these vases are from a series of three he created in the early 1970s known as Pinus (#2784), Avena (#3429), and Marmora (#3544 - not included here).
The larger "Pinus" vase measures approximately 4.75" W x 3.5" D x 6.5" H. Its title (meaning "pine") suggests that the texture is that of pine bark, though the undulating surface of the clear glass vessel is also reminiscent of sheets of melting ice.
The "Avena" vase measures approximately 3" W x 2.5" D x 6.875" H
