Original taizo minakawa (1917-2005) 'stone garden roan-ji garden' dyed textile print
this is just a great original piece. I recently picked up a collection of some scarce and important japanese 20th century woodblock prints that I am offering this week. This is was part of the collection, and truly one of the things I was most excited to buy. I have had a taizo minakawa woodcut print in the past and had known that he was most famous for being a textile dyer and weaver but had never been able to see one. From my understanding, they are his early works and are mostly in museums and get into collections and are never available for sale. This is an incredibly special piece. First, it is a wonderful view of the stone garden at the roan-ji temple in kyoto japan. I believe it is dyed rough silk fabric measuring 20 x 24 inches. Artist's stamp lower right. Overall very good condition. There is some discoloration and a few minor spots of pulling of the fabric but overall it is really excellent. The fabric is backed with wood that has the title and name of the artist in marker on the back. Then the piece is in the original frame with an additional backing. On the back of the frame is a label describing the subject. And even more importantly, there is an original shipping label on the back that has the piece coming directly from the artist himself. It was sent to the collector in pennsylvania and then I got this piece from the dealer who handled the estate of the collector. Outstanding provenance for this incredibly scarce and important piece of 20th century japanese art. A must have for any collector. One of the few that I imagine are not in museums. Frame is ready to hang. Just a complete package. Frame measures 20 3/4 x 25 inches.
For those not familiar with the artist, his biography from a gallery that offers the artist's work reads: "taizo minagawa was born in kyoto and graduated from the kyoto city school of arts and crafts. While he is best known as a weaver and textile dyer in japan, he also produced wonderful self-carved, self-printed woodblock prints during the 20th century."
