Earthenware Transferware Platter by Enoch Wood of Staffordshire, marked on the back as "91 Wood."
The black transferware platter is from early to mid 1800s in the Pattern of Rievaulx Abbey, Yorkshire. Scene is trees and three fisherman in the foreground on rocks, the water and cows. Far distance shows the Abbey and hillside. Border is floral in gray, black and white gradient.
The Abbey ruins are near Helmsley, in the North York Moors National Park, North Yorkshire, England.
Platter measures 16 3/4" length, 13 1/8" tall and depth of 1.5". Weight of 3.3lbs.
"Enoch Wood (1759-1840), who came to be known as ‘Father of the Potteries’, was a very successful manufacturer who developed an export trade to North America, said in 1843 to be the largest of any Staffordshire manufacturer."
