This unusually-shaped textile is known as a "makden" and was originally used by a nomadic traveler as an artful covering for his horse. Placed between the saddle and the horse, the makden cushioned the rigid saddle and kept the horse warm in cold climates.
Dated to the late 19th century, this Tibetan saddle has a 'butterfly' form, defined by rounded front corners, pointed back corners, and a narrowed center. The carpet's symmetrical design features camel and brown tiger stripes. A red and blue border frames the central design for some added depth. Hand-knotted in a palette of red, orange, and blue, the small saddle continues to enrich its surroundings with bright color and rich texture. The underside is a lovely ultramarine blue.
A beautiful unusual piece to enhance any space!
