This plate is late 19th c., it is stamped in hollow in the rough non glazed bottom with an old hollow marking for the manufacture of Caldas in Portugal, C.1890-1900.
This Portuguese trompe-l'oeil platter features a Lobster on a textured and mottled ground of sand, mussels, seaweed and shells.
See the hollow marks on the reverse.

Bernard Palissy (1510-1590), the great French Renaissance potter, created a style of ceramic art that reproduced three-dimensional still lifes.
This dish is from the Portuguese town of Caldas da Rainha and from it's well known manufacture.
This manufacture still produces Majolica but not in such intricate forms.
Very good antique condition, consistent with age and use, no chips or repairs. See less
