A signed Flambe´ Sung Ware art pottery vase from Royal Doulton of England dating to the Art Deco period, circa 1930-1940. The high-fired glossy glaze consists of a deep, rich red in combination with shades of dark indigo to peacock blue with fiery veined tendrils of orange and yellow. The earthenware vase bears a printed factory crown and lion Flambe´ mark underfoot, alongside a hand-painted SUNG script mark, an FM monogram for Frederick Moore and Noke signature for Charles Noke. Very good condition, measuring 7.38 inches height.
At the turn of the 20th century, Doulton's chief designer, Charles Noke (1858-1941) and his colleagues experimented with firing techniques and metallic oxides in their pursuit of re-developing these highly ornamental transmutation glazes inspired by ancient Chinese antecedents. Their tests and trials resulted in sophisticated patterns and color combinations unique to every example of Doulton's artistic Flambe ware.
