Impressionist and Post-Impressionist Paintings from the USSR was a 1973 exhibition that featured 41 paintings from the Hermitage and Pushkin museums and included seven paintings by Henri Matisse, seven by Paul Gauguin, six by Pablo Picasso, five by Paul Cézanne, and three by Vincent van Gogh.
The artwork featured on this lithograph poster is "Les Capucines a La Danse" aka "Nasturtiums with the Dance II" by Matisse. A very limited number of these posters were created for the Kimbell. Very rare. This poster is mounted or printed on board and was likely used as part of the actual exhibit and not sold as a rolled print.
The exhibit was only shown in 4 venues:
M. Knoedler and Co., New York, May 3–June 3, 1973
Los Angeles County Museum of Art, June 13–July 8, 1973
Art Institute of Chicago, July 18–August 12, 1973
Kimbell Art Museum, Fort Worth, August 22–September 16, 1973 (last dates of the tour)
Negotiations with the Soviet Union, held privately by Dr. Armand Hammer allowed these works to be shown in the United States for the first time. The loan was made through M. Knoedler and Co., New York, in which Dr. Hammer held a controlling interest. His own collection had been on view in Leningrad and Moscow for several months and created the negotiating power to bring this exhibit out of the USSR.
This poster is significant both in the art world but also politically because it is a product of the policies of detente that began to exist with the now defunct Soviet Union after Leonid Brezhnev and Richard Nixon met during Brezhnev's June 1973 visit to the USA.
Poster is mounted on backing board. There is some slight bubbling in places, but otherwise is in excellent condition, colors are still vibrant.
Poster dimensions are 36”h x 19”w
